Maria Christina C. Ortua-Ang is with the firm’s Special Projects, Taxation and Banking, Finance & Securities practice groups.

Chris has advised international and domestic corporations on tax and other legal aspects of corporate acquisitions and divestments, and other commercial transactions. She has acted for both sellers and buyers, in asset sale transactions and share sale transactions, undertaking a broad range of services including due diligence, investment structuring, financing, drafting and negotiation of transaction documentation, and post-closing advice. She has worked with clients from industries such as infrastructure, energy, manufacturing, and retail. Her significant projects include:

  • the approximately USD300 million investment by Metro Pacific Investments Corporation and Keppel Infrastructure Trust in Philippine Coastal Storage and Pipeline Corporation, the largest independent petroleum product storage facility in the Philippines;
  • the PHP35.3 billion (approximately USD706 million) investment by global investment firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co and Singapore fund GIC Private Ltd in Metro Pacific Hospital Holdings Inc., the operator of the Philippines’ largest private hospitals and healthcare network;
  • the USD579.2 million (roughly PHP31 billion) acquisition of AC Energy Inc.’s thermal power business by Aboitiz Power Corporation, both leading power companies in the Philippines; and
  • the PHP600 million equity investment in the convenience store business in the Philippines by Lawson Inc., a leading convenience store franchise chain in Japan.

She also represents multinational companies before Philippine courts and revenue authorities in connection with tax assessments and other tax issues, and regularly handles requests for rulings, refund claims and tax treaty relief applications.

She obtained her Juris Doctor degree from the University of the Philippines College of Law (with honors) and obtained her Master of Laws (with distinction) from the Queen Mary University of London. She is a certified public accountant and a lawyer in the Philippines.
