Kapihan with SyCip in Subic: Discussion on Labor and Immigration Law Updates

SyCipLaw’s Subic Office and Employment & Immigration Department (EID), in partnership with the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) and the Subic Bay Workforce Development Foundation, Inc., held the Kapihan with SyCip in Subic: Discussion on Labor and Immigration Law Updates last September 18, 2015 at the Subic Bay Travelers Hotel. A total of 50 participants from over 40 companies attended the whole-day session, which featured lectures by SyCipLaw lawyers.

SBMA Labor Department Manager Severo C. Pastor, Jr. opened the session, followed by welcome remarks from Russel L. Rodriguez, who is the partner-in-charge of SyCipLaw’s Subic Office. Dante T. Pamintuan, senior partner of the firm, discussed the concept of employee rights to privacy against an employer’s right to regulate the online or offline behavior or its employees. Marianne M. Miguel, also a partner of the firm, provided participants with legal principles on how to balance employee and employer’s rights, and what employers can do to regulate romantic relationships in the workplace.

In the afternoon, Albert Vincent Y. Yu Chang, special counsel of the firm, discussed cross-cultural issues pertinent to human resource management and some approaches that managers should consider from a legal standpoint. Mr. Rodriguez gave on overview of recent developments in work visas and permits, immigration laws and regulations, and jurisprudence on deportation.

A networking break followed. Aside from the lecturers, partners Amer Hussein N. Mambuay and Ronald Mark C. Lleno, as well as Subic Office associate Rosevee R. Paylip-Guiang, were on hand to speak to participants one-on-one regarding their employment and immigration questions and concerns.
